Middleton At A Glance

Welcome to Middleton, Wisconsin — the Good Neighbor City. Middleton is consistently chosen by national publications as one of the best places in the United States to live, work and play. Located six miles west of Madison, the state’s capital, Middleton lies on the western shore of Lake Mendota: a prime location in a thriving region of the country. Middleton residents are close to all the big-city amenities that Madison offers but still enjoy the charm of a warm hometown atmosphere and an unusually close-knit community. That’s a unique combination to find.

Thriving Economy

Middleton’s vibrant and thriving economy is one of the many factors that make it a great place to live. The Middleton Area Development Corporation steadily works to create a growing business climate featuring 56 high-tech businesses. A large manufacturing sector provides many jobs, and there are healthy retail and accommodations sectors. In addition, its proximity to the state capital provides access to even more employment and career opportunities.

Top Quality Education

A robust public school system is essential for families with children when moving to a new town, and Middleton rises to the challenge. Many of its public schools rank in the top 10 in the entire state of Wisconsin, and its high school students rank 10 out of 10 for college readiness. There are also exceptional options for private schools. For higher education, the University of Wisconsin-Madison is a 12-minute drive away.

The Great Outdoors

It’s easy to enjoy the outdoors. The city has dedicated 25 percent of its land to permanent public open space. Its award-winning 22-mile trail network connects all parts of the city, including parks and shopping areas. In addition, the 550-acre Pheasant Branch Creek Conservancy dedicates itself to the preservation of Wisconsin’s natural habitats, including wetlands, prairie hills, natural springs and Native American Burial Grounds. Staffed mainly by volunteers, the Conservancy has increased its number of bird species and the overall number of birds, gaining recognition as a Wisconsin “Bird City.” In colder weather, residents can take advantage of cross-country skiing trails.

Recreation for All

Downtown is the central gathering point of the community. A free trolley takes visitors to experience local shops, cultural venues, museums, breweries and award-winning restaurants. The Capital Brewery is known as “Middleton’s Backyard” and offers live music and other entertainment in its Biergarten when the weather allows. The Nitty Gritty, which offers live blues music, has been a long-time winner of the Best Burger of Madison and is the official birthday venue. More than 775,000 guests have celebrated birthdays here; that’s about 57 a day, every day.

Caring Community with Cultural Pride

Local community members take a great deal of pride in their city’s history and heritage. The Middleton Area Historical Society carefully preserves the history of their town, honoring past residents who helped shape the community. The Long Table Beer Café celebrates community by providing communal dining where visitors “walk in as strangers – leave as friends.” The Middleton Players Theater has been honored many times in its 25-year history for significant contributions to live theatre and the arts.
